GUSC :: Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. I’ve never jumped before. How do I know if this is the sport for me?
A. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never jumped. We offer training for beginners and from there you’ll see if it’s the sport for you. You won’t know if you don’t try it though!!
Q. What training do you offer?
A. There are two types of training courses, Static Line and AFF (accelerated freefall). We recommend students to do Static Line since it’s easier to budget for and can be done at your own pace (you don’t have to be there every weekend, making it a very flexible course).
For more info on SL and AFF see Skydive Courses.
Q. Is it not really expensive?
A. Once you’ve done your first jump, it only costs £25* per jump (which also includes training and briefings). Your first jump is £129* which includes a full day of ground school, all your kit, and your jump of course. Once you get qualified, you can jump for as little as £10!!
*These prices are exclusive to GUSC members.
Q. Where does GUSC go to Skydive and how do I get there?
A. Our dropzone (DZ) is Skydive St Andrews. GUSC provides a minibus each weekend to take members up there. Its also easy to find if you’d rather drive.
Q. Are there any age or weight limits?
A. You have to be 18+ (or 16+ with parental consent). For first time jumpers, there is also a weight limit of 14 stone (exceptions made).
Q. What kind of parachute will I be using?
A. Specially designed ‘ram-airs’ which are square as opposed to the old style round ones. They are all modern and very reliable. The reserve at the top of the container is packed by a British Parachute Association parachute rigger and is equipped with an Automatic Activation Device. We utilise these systems for your safety.
Q. Can I bring some mates along for the banter?
A. Of course, there more the merrier! (If they wish to travel on the minibus, then they will have to be members of the gym for insurance purposes.) The DZ has been designed with spectators in mind and has a fully licensed bar, as well as a canteen, spectator area and bunkrooms.
